Introduction
Transport, communication and trade are the lifelines of a nation and its economy. Goods and services produced at one location need to be moved to areas of demand, making efficient transport a prerequisite for development. Movement of goods and services occurs across three domains — land, water and air — giving rise to three broad categories of transport.
India, despite its vast size and diversity, is well-linked with the rest of the world through railways, airways, waterways, newspapers, radio, television, cinema and the internet. These networks have contributed enormously to socio-economic progress, facilitated trade from local to international levels and enriched the quality of life of its citizens.
