Survival requires earning enough revenues to cover costs; profit provides incentive for continued successful operation; growth involves expanding sales volume, number of employees, products, or capital investment. Management must achieve these in the interest of all stakeholders including shareholders, employees, customers, and the government.

Social objectives involve the creation of benefits for society through environment-friendly production, employment for underprivileged sections, and providing basic amenities. Personal or individual objectives involve reconciling the personal goals of employees — financial needs, social needs, and higher-level needs for personal growth — with the broader organisational objectives, creating harmony within the organisation.

Management is important for five key reasons. It helps in achieving group goals by giving a common direction to individual effort. It increases efficiency by reducing costs and increasing productivity through better planning, organising, directing, staffing, and controlling. It creates a dynamic organisation by helping people adapt to change so the organisation can maintain its competitive edge. It helps achieve personal objectives by motivating and leading individuals so that personal goals are met while contributing to the overall organisational objective.

Management also helps in the development of society by fulfilling the multiple objectives of different groups that constitute the organisation. It provides good quality products and services, creates employment opportunities, adopts new technology for the greater good, and leads the path towards growth and development.

Management is both an art and a science. As an art, it involves the skilful and personal application of existing knowledge to achieve desired results — it requires study, observation, experience, creativity, and imagination. As a science, it has a systematised body of knowledge with principles developed through observation and experimentation. However, since it deals with human behaviour, outcomes cannot be accurately predicted, making it an inexact science. Art and science in management are not mutually exclusive but complement each other.

Management does not fully satisfy the criteria of a profession. It does have a well-defined body of knowledge taught at institutions like IIMs. However, there is no restriction on anyone being designated a manager regardless of qualifications, unlike medicine or law. There are associations like AIMA that have codes of conduct, but membership is not compulsory and has no statutory backing. The basic purpose of management — helping the organisation achieve its goals — may shift from profit maximisation to broader service, further differentiating it from traditional professions.

There are three levels in the hierarchy of an organisation. Top management consists of the senior-most executives — chairperson, CEO, COO, president, vice-president — who formulate overall goals and strategies, integrate diverse elements, coordinate different departments, and are responsible for the welfare and survival of the organisation. Middle management, comprising division heads and departmental managers like production managers, acts as the link between top and lower levels. They interpret policies framed by top management, ensure staffing, assign duties, motivate personnel, and cooperate with other departments.

Supervisory or operational management, comprising foremen and supervisors, directly oversees the workforce. Their authority is limited according to plans drawn by top management. They play a vital role by passing instructions from middle management to workers, maintaining quality of output, minimising wastage, and maintaining safety standards. The time spent by managers in different functions varies — top managers spend more time in planning and organising than lower-level managers.

Management is described as comprising five interrelated functions. Planning involves determining in advance what is to be done and who is to do it, setting goals and developing ways to achieve them. It cannot prevent problems but prepares contingency plans. Organising involves assigning duties, grouping tasks, establishing authority, and allocating resources to implement a plan. In reality, managers rarely perform these functions in isolation — they are interrelated and overlap. Coordination is the force that binds all other functions of management. It is the process by which a manager synchronises the activities of different departments towards the achievement of a common goal. Coordination is not a separate function — it is the essence of management, implicit and inherent in all functions. It integrates group efforts, ensures unity of action, and runs as a common thread through all activities such as purchase, production, sales, and finance.
