Key concept recap
Introduction
Directing is one of the key managerial functions performed by every manager in the organisation. It refers to the process of instructing, guiding, counselling, motivating and leading people to achieve organisational objectives. Unlike planning, organising and staffing which prepare a setting for action, directing actually initiates action in the organisation.
Directing is not merely issuing orders but encompasses a wide range of activities including supervision, motivation, leadership and communication. Every manager from the top executive to the supervisor performs the directing function, and it takes place throughout the life of the organisation irrespective of who occupies managerial positions.
