Key concept recap
Introduction
The way business is conducted has undergone fundamental changes in the last decade. The term 'mode of business' refers to the manner in which business is conducted, and the prefix 'emerging' highlights that these changes are happening in the present and are likely to continue. The three strongest trends shaping business today are digitisation, outsourcing, and internationalisation and globalisation.
Digitisation refers to the conversion of text, sound, images, video, and other content into binary format (ones and zeroes) that can be transmitted electronically. This chapter focuses on the first two trends: electronic business (e-business) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). These newer modes are not entirely new businesses but are simply new and improved ways of doing business, driven by the need to create value, meet competitive pressures, and leverage emerging technologies.
