Key concept recap
Introduction
The chapter opens with images glorifying industrialisation — a music cover from 1900 depicting the 'Dawn of the Century' and a trade magazine illustration comparing a modern mechanic with Aladdin. These images associate the modern world with rapid technological change, machines, factories, railways and steamships. They represent industrialisation as a story of progress and development.
However, the chapter challenges this triumphant narrative by asking deeper questions: Is industrialisation always based on rapid technological development? What has it meant to people's lives? To answer these questions, the chapter examines industrialisation first in Britain and then in colonial India, showing how the pattern of industrial change was shaped by very different conditions in each case.
