Tiger is a key species in the faunal web. By 1973, tiger population had dwindled to just 1,827 from an estimated 55,000 at the turn of the century. Major threats included poaching for trade, shrinking habitat, depletion of prey base species, and growing human populations. The trade in tiger skins and use of bones in traditional medicines, especially in Asian countries, pushed the tiger to the verge of extinction.

Project Tiger was launched in 1973 — one of the most well-publicised wildlife campaigns in the world. Since India and Nepal together provide habitat for about two-thirds of the world's surviving tiger population, they became prime targets for poachers. Tiger conservation was viewed not only as saving an endangered species but as preserving entire ecosystems. Major tiger reserves include Corbett (Uttarakhand), Sunderbans (West Bengal), Bandhavgarh (Madhya Pradesh), Sariska (Rajasthan), Manas (Assam), and Periyar (Kerala).

Forests and wildlife resources in India are largely owned or managed by the government through the Forest Department. They are classified into three categories: Reserved Forests, Protected Forests, and Unclassed Forests. Reserved forests constitute more than half of total forest land and are the most valuable for conservation. Protected forests account for nearly one-third and are safeguarded from further depletion. Unclassed forests are other forests and wastelands belonging to both government and private individuals or communities.

Madhya Pradesh has the largest area under permanent forests — 75% of its total forest area. States like Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Maharashtra have large percentages of reserved forests, while Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan have a bulk of their forests under protected category. Eastern states and parts of Gujarat have a high proportion of unclassed forests managed by local communities.

Conservation strategies involving communities are not new in India. Local communities in many areas are working alongside government officials to protect forest habitats, recognising that this secures their own long-term livelihoods. In Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan, villagers fought against mining using the Wildlife Protection Act. In Alwar district, inhabitants of five villages declared 1,200 hectares as the Bhairodev Dakav 'Sonchuri', setting their own rules banning hunting and protecting wildlife from outside encroachments.

The Chipko movement in the Himalayas successfully resisted deforestation and demonstrated the success of community afforestation with indigenous species. Groups like the Beej Bachao Andolan in Tehri and Navdanya showed that diversified crop production without synthetic chemicals is both viable and economically feasible. The Joint Forest Management (JFM) programme, formally launched after Odisha passed the first resolution in 1988, involves local village institutions in managing degraded forest lands in exchange for non-timber forest produce and a share in timber harvested.

Nature worship is an age-old tribal belief that all creations of nature must be protected. This belief has preserved several virgin forests in pristine form called Sacred Groves — forests of God and Goddesses — where interference is strictly banned by local communities. Certain societies revere specific trees: the Mundas and Santhals of Chota Nagpur worship mahua and kadamba trees; tribals of Odisha and Bihar worship tamarind and mango trees during weddings.

Sacred qualities are ascribed to springs, mountain peaks, plants, and animals across many Indian cultures. In Bishnoi villages in Rajasthan, herds of blackbuck, chinkara, nilgai, and peacocks live as part of the community and are never harmed. Macaques and langurs around temples are fed daily. These traditions reflect the deep integration of biodiversity conservation into Indian cultural and spiritual practices.

Forest and wildlife resources are the foundation of ecological balance and human survival. India's vast biological diversity — encompassing flora, fauna, and micro-organisms — is not only ecologically significant but also culturally embedded in the traditions of local communities. Conservation efforts, ranging from legislation like the Wildlife Protection Act to community-driven initiatives like JFM, sacred groves, and the Chipko movement, demonstrate that sustainable management is achievable when governments and communities work together.
