Chemical kinetics is the branch of chemistry that deals with the study of reaction rates and their mechanisms. The word 'kinetics' is derived from the Greek word 'kinesis' meaning movement. While thermodynamics predicts the feasibility of a reaction and chemical equilibrium determines the extent, chemical kinetics tells us about the speed of a reaction and the factors controlling it.
Practical relevance of chemical kinetics is vast — it helps explain why food spoils, how dental filling materials set rapidly, and how fuel burns in an engine. Importantly, thermodynamics may predict a reaction is feasible (e.g., diamond converting to graphite) but kinetics reveals that the rate may be imperceptibly slow, making such conversions practically impossible.
