Introduction to Microbes
Microbes are the most diverse and omnipresent living organisms on Earth, found in soil, water, air, inside bodies of animals and plants, and even in extreme environments like geysers (up to 100°C), deep soil layers, beneath thick layers of snow, and highly acidic conditions. They include protozoa, bacteria, fungi, microscopic animals, plant viruses, viroids, and prions.
Although microbes are often associated with diseases, a large number of them are immensely beneficial to human beings. They contribute to food production, industrial manufacturing, environmental management, energy generation, pest control, and soil fertility. This chapter highlights the diverse and vital roles microbes play in enhancing human welfare.
