Key concept recap
Introduction to Reproductive Health
Reproductive health refers to a total well-being in all aspects of reproduction — physical, emotional, behavioural and social. As defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), a reproductively healthy society consists of people with physically and functionally normal reproductive organs and normal emotional and behavioural interactions in all sex-related aspects. This concept goes beyond the mere absence of disease and encompasses a broader social dimension.
India was among the first countries in the world to initiate national-level action plans aimed at achieving total reproductive health as a social goal. These programmes, initially called 'family planning', were started in 1951 and have since evolved into the comprehensive 'Reproductive and Child Health Care (RCH) programmes', addressing a wide range of reproduction-related issues.
