Introduction to Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are compounds composed exclusively of carbon and hydrogen atoms. They serve as the primary sources of energy in daily life, occurring in fuels such as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), CNG (compressed natural gas), LNG (liquefied natural gas), petrol, diesel, and kerosene oil. Petroleum and coal gas are obtained through fractional distillation and destructive distillation respectively.
Beyond energy, hydrocarbons have extensive industrial applications. They are used as raw materials for the manufacture of polymers like polythene, polypropene, and polystyrene. Higher hydrocarbons function as solvents for paints, and they serve as starting materials in the synthesis of dyes, drugs, and numerous other organic compounds.
