Medium difficulty • Concept in a practical situation
Question 1
Applied ConceptRajan has developed an innovative solar-powered irrigation pump that can reduce water usage by 50%. He wants to produce it on a large scale but lacks the capital to do so alone. He is advised to form a company. With reference to this situation, explain the feasibility studies Rajan must conduct before deciding to form a company.
- Rajan must first conduct a technical feasibility study to determine whether the raw materials, technology, and manufacturing processes required for mass production of his solar pump are readily available in the market or can be imported without difficulty.
- He must then assess financial feasibility to estimate the total capital required for setting up the manufacturing facility, supply chain, and marketing; if the required funds are so large that they cannot reasonably be raised by floating a company, the idea must be reconsidered.
- Finally, Rajan must conduct an economic feasibility study to evaluate whether the solar irrigation pump can be sold at a price that makes the business profitable after accounting for all costs, as a technically and financially feasible project that is not profitable would not justify forming a company.
