Key concept recap
Introduction
Oxygen is continuously utilised by body cells to break down molecules like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids to derive energy for various activities. This process generates carbon dioxide, which is harmful and must be removed from the body. The exchange of O2 from the atmosphere with CO2 produced by the cells is called breathing, commonly known as respiration.
The respiratory organs and the mechanism of breathing differ across animal groups depending on habitat and organisation. This chapter describes the human respiratory system, the mechanism and regulation of breathing, gas exchange and transport, and common respiratory disorders.
