Chinese paper reached Europe via the Silk Route in the eleventh century. Marco Polo brought knowledge of woodblock printing from China in 1295, and Italians began producing woodblock books. Demand for books grew rapidly, but manuscript production by scribes was too slow and costly. By the early fifteenth century, woodblock printing spread widely in Europe for textiles, playing cards, and religious images.

The decisive breakthrough came at Strasbourg, Germany, where Johann Gutenberg developed the first-known printing press in the 1430s, perfecting it by 1448. Drawing on his knowledge of wine presses and goldsmithing, he created moveable metal types for all 26 Roman alphabet letters. His first printed book was the Bible, with about 180 copies produced in three years. Between 1450 and 1550, presses spread across Europe, producing 20 million copies of books in the second half of the fifteenth century alone, rising to 200 million by the sixteenth century — a transformation called the print revolution.

The print revolution changed people's relationship with information, knowledge, and authority. Printing reduced costs and labour, enabling books to reach a wider readership. A new 'reading public' emerged alongside the older 'hearing public'. However, since literacy rates remained low across Europe until the twentieth century, printers published illustrated ballads and folk tales that could be sung and recited aloud at village gatherings, blurring the boundary between oral and reading cultures.

Print also enabled wider circulation of challenging ideas. Martin Luther's Ninety Five Theses (1517) were quickly reproduced and widely read, sparking the Protestant Reformation. His translation of the New Testament sold 5,000 copies within weeks. However, not everyone welcomed print — the Roman Catholic Church established an Index of Prohibited Books from 1558, and many authorities feared that uncontrolled print would spread heretical and rebellious ideas. Erasmus expressed anxiety that the flood of new books would destroy scholarship through excess.

Literacy rates rose sharply in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, aided by church-run schools in villages. By the late eighteenth century, some parts of Europe had literacy rates of 60–80 per cent. A 'reading mania' emerged as people demanded books in ever-increasing numbers. Printers catered to diverse audiences with penny chapbooks, almanacs, ballads, romances, and newspapers. The periodical press combined current affairs with entertainment. Ideas of Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Newton spread through popular literature.

Many people believed that books were engines of progress that would end despotism. The French novelist Louise-Sebastien Mercier declared the printing press the most powerful engine of progress. Historians have linked print culture to the French Revolution, arguing that Enlightenment ideas spread by print eroded the legitimacy of monarchy and church, and that underground literature mocking the royalty fuelled revolutionary sentiments. However, print alone did not determine how people thought — readers interpreted what they read in their own ways.

By the late eighteenth century, the press began to be made of metal. In the mid-nineteenth century, Richard M. Hoe of New York perfected the power-driven cylindrical press capable of printing 8,000 sheets per hour, particularly useful for newspapers. The late nineteenth century saw the development of the offset press, which could print up to six colours. Electrically operated presses from the early twentieth century further accelerated production. Automatic paper reels, photoelectric colour controls, and improved plate quality all transformed the appearance of printed texts.

Publishers also developed new commercial strategies. Serialisation of novels in nineteenth-century periodicals created new literary forms. Cheap Shilling Series appeared in 1920s England. The dust cover or book jacket is a twentieth-century innovation. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, cheap paperback editions helped sustain book buying. Children became an important readership category after compulsory primary education was introduced in the late nineteenth century, giving rise to dedicated children's presses and lending libraries.

India had a rich tradition of handwritten manuscripts in Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, and vernacular languages, copied on palm leaves or handmade paper. However, manuscripts were expensive, fragile, and written in varying scripts making them difficult to read widely. Even in pre-colonial Bengal's village school system, students learnt to write by dictation rather than by reading texts.

The printing press arrived in Goa with Portuguese missionaries in the mid-sixteenth century. Jesuit priests printed tracts in Konkani and Kanara; Catholic priests printed the first Tamil book in 1579 at Cochin and the first Malayalam book in 1713. Dutch Protestant missionaries had printed 32 Tamil texts by 1710. English-language press developed late; James Augustus Hickey began the Bengal Gazette in 1780 — a private, independent paper that published gossip about Company officials, leading to his persecution by Warren Hastings. By the close of the eighteenth century, both English and Indian-run newspapers and journals had begun to appear.

From the early nineteenth century, print became the arena for intense religious and social debates in India. Rammohun Roy's Sambad Kaumudi (1821) and the orthodox Samachar Chandrika debated reform. Persian, Gujarati, Urdu, and Hindi newspapers proliferated. Muslim seminaries like Deoband (founded 1867) used cheap lithographic presses to publish fatwas and religious tracts. Hindu presses such as the Naval Kishore Press and Shri Venkateshwar Press spread vernacular religious texts. Print created pan-Indian identities by conveying news across regions.

New literary forms flourished with print — the novel, short stories, essays, and poetry all catered to readers who wanted their own lives reflected in literature. A visual culture also emerged: Raja Ravi Varma produced mass-circulation images, and caricatures and cartoons in newspapers and journals commented on social and political issues. The Battala area of Calcutta became a hub for popular printed books. Women's reading and writing expanded significantly — pioneers such as Rashsundari Debi (Amar Jiban, 1876), Tarabai Shinde, and Pandita Ramabai wrote powerfully about women's lives. Print also enabled poor and low-caste people like Jyotiba Phule, B.R. Ambedkar, Periyar, and Kashibaba to articulate demands for justice.

Colonial censorship of print in India evolved over time. Before 1798, the East India Company was primarily concerned about critical English-language commentary on Company misrule. By the 1820s, the Calcutta Supreme Court regulated press freedom, and the Company encouraged pro-British newspapers. In 1835, Governor-General Bentinck revised press laws, restoring freedoms, guided by Thomas Macaulay's liberal principles.

After the revolt of 1857, the colonial government took a harsher view of the vernacular press. The Vernacular Press Act (1878), modelled on Irish Press Laws, gave the government sweeping powers to censor and seize nationalist newspapers. During World War I, 22 newspapers were required to furnish securities and 18 shut down rather than comply. In 1942, about 90 newspapers were suppressed. Despite repression, nationalist newspapers grew in number, and figures like Balgangadhar Tilak, whose Kesari was a vehicle of nationalist sentiment, inspired widespread protests when imprisoned in 1908. Gandhi explicitly linked the fight for Swaraj with liberty of speech and press freedom.

Print culture is one of the most transformative forces in modern history. Beginning with woodblock printing in East Asia, passing through Gutenberg's moveable type revolution in Europe, and spreading to colonial India, the printed word fundamentally altered how knowledge was produced, circulated, and contested. It created new reading publics, fuelled religious reformations, enabled Enlightenment thought, challenged colonial authority, and gave voice to women, the poor, and marginalised communities who had previously been excluded from formal literacy.
